Text:  Matthew 18:15-20

 

 

1. When you were growing up, what did you and your sibling(s) argue about?   How were the arguments usually resolved?

 

2. What was one of the worst things your brother or sister did to you when you were growing up?  What did you do about that then?

 

3. How did your parents settle fights between you and your siblings?

 

     4. Identify the stages of the reconciliation process.

 

5. What obstacles will frustrate the process?

 

6. Why not go public immediately?

 

7. Have you or do you know of anyone who has followed this process.  What were the results?

 

8. How do you get up the courage to confront?

 

9. When you get up the courage to confront, how do you avoid being vindictive or hurtful?

 

10. What does this passage say about the importance of getting the counsel of others?

Sunday's Lesson: "Share The Bread"

 

Text: Matthew 15:29-39

 

1. 15:37 "They all ate and were satisfied". What is it like to be hungry? Describe a time when you were hungry. What kind of food leaves you satisfied/dissatisfied?

 

2. Describe leftovers at your house? Define "leftovers". What does the presence of the leftover "broken pieces" indicate about this event?

 

3. Describe the Sea of Galilee and the area around it. What is the message Jesus is sending by being along the Sea of Galilee?

 

4. Make some comparisons with this feeing of multitudes with the previous feeding of multitudes in Matthew 14:13—21

 

5. Jesus said, "I have compassion for these people..." 15:32. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being absolutely no compassion and 10 being totally compassionate, how compassionate are you?

 

6. What is the source of compassion? What kinds of things prevent/destroy compassion?

 

7. What significance might there be in the number seven? Seven loaves; seven baskets.

 

8. What might have happened to the seven baskets of leftovers?

 

9. What seems shocking to you about the disciples' lack of faith and insight? Compare 14:15

 

10. When you face overwhelming situations, what might cause you to remember God's provision for you in the past?

"What's It Worth?"

Text: Matthew 13:44-46

 

1. Have persons describe the kinds of things they have in storage and why these items are in storage? What is the psychology of storage? What are we thinking?

 

2. If you could have a successful yard sale, what would you do with the proceeds?

 

3. Describe the emotions that usually come with finding a good deal on something valuable?

 

4. What does it mean to "sell everything" for the kingdom of God? Is this strictly monetary? What else could you "sell"?

 

5. How do you determine value?

 

6. If you could change one thing about a pearl, what would you change?

 

7. What good are pearls? How is the Christian faith like/unlike a pearl?

 

8. What is there about being a Christian that makes it "a hard sell"...or, an "easy sell'?

 

9. If being a Christian is so valuable, then what kinds of things can we do to secure and protect it?

Topic: "Get A Life"

Text: Matthew 9:18--26

 

 

1. Three Gospels record this event. Ask 3 persons to read: Mark 5:21-43; Luke 8:40-56; Matthew 9:18-26.

 

2. What prompted the ruler to approach Jesus? What is the relation between desperation and faith? What is the role of faith in healing?

 

3. If you were the woman, how would you feel just before you reached out to touch Jesus? Just afterward? How was her faith evident?

 

4. Compare the ruler and the woman. What does Jesus' response to both show about the Kingdom of God?

 

5. Jesus called the woman "Daughter". What might that mean to her? How does a person become a child of God?

 

6. The woman touched the robe of Jesus. Discuss the power of touch.

 

7. Jesus said, "the girl is not dead but asleep". What evidence was there that the girl was dead? What caused Jesus to say the girl was asleep? How is death like/unlike sleep?

 

8. Long before the word "therapy" became associated with psychiatry, it was a biblical term meaning healing in the deepest and fullest sense. Luke 9:11 uses "therapy" to describe the ministry of Jesus. The word "salvation" is a medical term meaning "wholeness". Describe some of the values of our Christian faith.

Lesson: Just Say The Word

 

Text: Matthew 8:5-13

 

1. Who is one of the greatest people of faith that you have met? What touched you about that person's life?

 

2. What is a centurion? What is his citizenship?

 

3. What is remarkable about Jesus' offer to go to the house of the centurion?

 

4. Identify some of the obstacles the centurion could have let stand between him and Jesus. Today, what keeps us from the Lord? What keeps us from knowing that God really wants to meet our needs?

 

5. In 8:11-12 who are the "many"? Who are the "subjects of the kingdom"? What is Jesus' point in sharing this with a Jewish audience?

 

6. In 8:1-4 Jesus healed a leper. In 8:5-13 Jesus healed a Centurion's servant. In 8:14-17 Jesus healed a woman. From a Jewish view, the leper, the centurion and the woman were outcasts. Who are the outcasts in our community?

 

7. What is remarkable about the manner in which Jesus healed?

 

8. Matthew 7:29 says that "Jesus taught as one who HAD authority."

Matthew 9:6 says, "the Son of man HAS authority on earth."

Matthew 28:18 says, "ALL authority in heaven and earth has been given to me."

What does this authority mean to you?
