Title: What Six Cross Eyes Saw

Text: John 19:16-27

1. Discuss the purposes of executions.

2. From Luke 23:35—43, what might the thief who ridiculed Jesus have been thinking? Consider the comments of the crowd and the soldiers.

3. From Luke 23:35—43, what might the thief who acknowledged the innocent Jesus have been thinking? What might have motivated him to speak up?

4. In Genesis 2:8 & Ezekiel 28:13, Paradise describes the Garden of Eden. In Jesus’ time, Paradise described the eternal state of the righteous. Revelation 2:7 says the “tree of life is in the paradise of God”. Discuss: Where is Paradise? For whom does Paradise exist? How can this thief be in Paradise without being baptized?

5. Discuss I Corinthians 1:18, “The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it IS the power of God.” What is foolish about the cross? What does “being saved” indicate about salvation? How is the cross the “power of God”?
