Sunday December 11 at 11:00 at East Unaka Christian Church
Sunday's Lesson: "The Christmas Messiah" from The Gospel of John 1:2
1. What is there about Santa Claus that makes him so popular? How is Jesus like/unlike Santa?
2. The word Messiah means "anointed." It's a Hebrew word transliterated into English. 'mashiah'. Translated into Greek, it is christos, from which we get CHRIST which is more of a title than a name. Roughly the term means, king. In Latin the term is Caesar, in German the term is Kaiser; in Russian the term is Czar; in certain Middle Eastern languages the term is Shah. It refers to someone who has been chosen or anointed for a particular office. So, today, what does the word "Messiah" mean?
3. Over 300 prophecies were exactly fulfilled in the birth of Jesus. Wayne mentioned three of these prophecies. Name these three.
4. With all the prophecies being exactly fulfilled in the birth of Jesus, how could some deny that he was the Messiah?
5. Of Jesus John the baptizer asked, "Are you the one? Are you the Messiah, are you the one for whom I was preparing the way; the one who would come and, destroy the evil one; who would preach the wrath of God and sinners would be blasted out of their complacency? What was happening to John the baptizer that caused him to ask this question? Compare and contrast John the baptizer and Jesus.
6. If Jesus told you that you are his personal representative in the world today. How would you respond?
